"Listening to new Bel Canto material is always a moment we all look out for at the editorial staff, it is not less when a solo album by leadsinger Anneli Drecker enters our mailbox. On “Frolic” Drecker opens some more dance infested registers with clear references to the godfathers of Detroit electro. Being a kid from the ‘80s herself she is very much at her ease in this mix bringing tracks that all are built around strong compositions and well sought sounds and samples. Note that Anneli’s voice has been processed as in the good old Bel Canto days leaving a very fresh artic vocal colour. Compared to “Tundra”, her first solo release, this album will appeal to more fans of bel Canto for being less closed. An absolute pearl is “My Emily” which is as you can read in the interview we had with Anneli in fact a song she originally wrote for Morten Harket and that is very much audible. Other tracks that jump out are “Stop this” (which is driven by a fierce bass like sound ending in a chorus climax that is irresistible), “Painted black” (which is a subtle experiment between click and cut technique, electro clash elements and ‘80s synth layers). A track which deserves a club remix is “Desire” as it holds so many groovy touches that it’d be a waste not seeing this song experiencing a wild clublife. And in fact the same goes for the ethnic “The monkey trap”. Let’s hope that a label outside Norway picks this release up pretty fast."
