Metal Mickey - Series 1 (RARE) 80s UK TV - PeerDen com
If you are an 80s Britkid, then the following lyrics will either give you a rosy nostalgic feeling or a very large feeling of sickening nauseousness. You have been warned...
"Ready! Steady! Are you set... for Metal Mickey?
He's the cutest robot yet! Metal Mickey!"
Er... yes. Exactly how I feel after hearing that again:
Nostalgic and sick!
From 1980, here we have the complete first series of cult British robocom Metal Mickey (not to be confused with the classic Suede song of the same name!). Produced and directed by ex-Monkee Mickey Dolenz (who was also responsible for the fabulous sci-fi kiddy comedy Luna starring a young Patsy Kensit - that's the one I'm waiting for to be released on dvd!). Originally shown on ITV, Metal Mickey became a huge Saturday "tea-time" hit and went on to last for a total of four series, ending in 1982. John Edward stars as Metal Mickey along with the always excellent Michael Stainton, Georgina Melville (remember her in that public information film about bike safety with Keep It In The Family's Robert Gillespie?), Gary Shail, Ashley Knight, Lucinda Bateson, Lola Young and the late, great Irene Handl. Written by Colin Bostock-Smith - who also wrote for a myriad of British comedy shows including Alas Smith & Jones, Not The Nine O'Clock News, Who Dares Wins, Russ Abbot's Madhouse, The Russ Abbot Show, Me and My Girl, Roland Rat - The Series, Naked Video and As Time Goes By, amongst many others.
The plot: Invented by Ken (Ashley Knight), a teenage electronics whiz in a time when that seemed an exciting thing to be, Metal Mickey comes to life when Janey (Lola Young), the girl from next door, pops an "Atomic Thunderbuster" in his metal mouth. Although mostly concerned with the boogie and a supply of "Atomic Thunderbusters", Mickey settles in with the Wilberforce family - Bootface, Dippy, Clever Clogs and the rest - while finding that, "I's got the power!" Before long, he's taking control of the vacuum cleaner (Metal Mickey Lives), falling in love with Haley (Mickey in Love) and avoiding being taken away by a pair of officious civil servants (Top Secret Mickey). Mickey also helps Haley and Steve (Quadrophenia's Gary Shail) with their homework (School Master Mickey), falls ill (Hiccy Mickey) and gets kidnapped (Taking the Mickey). He gets into trouble counterfeiting money to keep Gran (Irene Handl) in betting slips and gin (Mickey Makes Money) and, in the final episode, Music Man Mickey, has a pop hit, learns the real meaning of family and finally gets old Bootface to boogie.
In a similar vein to other fantasy sitcoms such as the classic Rentaghost, Genie In The House, Small Wonder and Melissa Joan Hart's Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Metal Mickey is a charmingly silly, easy-going sitcom both kids and kids-at-heart can enjoy. Not only was Metal Mickey a successful tv show, Britkids will also remember that it became a very popular sweet! In fact, the incredibly fizzy bonbon-like sweet - called "Atomic Thunderbusters" - outlasted the show by many years (like Kojak lollipops!).
