During the Taisho era (1915A.D. - 1925A.D.), a young girl, Shinguji Sakura, leaves her home in Sendai for Tokyo. There she hopes to join the Teikoku kagekidan, an elite military unit charged with the defense of the Imperial Capital against demonic forces.

However, upon her arrival, she discovers that the Teikoku kagekidan is a popular opera troupe. Unbeknowst to her, the members of the opera troupe have a secret. Beneath the Imperial Theater is stored the mecha known as Koubu with which they defend the Imperial Capital.

Despite several false starts, Sakura tries her best to get to know her new companions and works hard to succeed as both a Koubu pilot and an actress, although the relationship between the two perplexes her.

Meanwhile, an unknown menace gathers it's strength.
