Another anniversary in 2009 is the 250th year of Georg Friedrich Händel's death. While his instrumental works - most of all the Water Music an the Music for the Royal Fireworks - have found continuous acclaim of all audiences since, his operas are only well received again since about twenty years ago. That is, in fact, bizarre, since these musical dramas are rather entertaining for the time of their composition, even though they sometimes last more than three hours. The reason for the pleasure in listening to them is, nevertheless, easily determined: They contain a very large number of extremely colourful and melodic, sometimes deeply depressed, sometimes overtly jubilant and virtuosic, Aria tunes that are capable of enjoying a broad audience even of today.
This may be adequately illutrated by the example of the three recitals offered to download here: Danielle de Niese, a soprano, along with Angelika Kirchschlager and Vesselina Kasarova, two mezzosopranos, offer us a considerable number of showpieces of Händel's fascinating vocal writing. It is natural thereby that the two mezzo-sopranos' recitals have some pieces in common, but don't let you bother with that: The two approaches are considerably different. In my opinion, Kirchschlager's more quiet and less "spectacular" readings are preferable to Kasarova's not always secure virtuosity, but don't let me think for you - download, listen and then judge for yourselves !
