Called the Haffner Symphony after the prominent Haffner family of Salzburg, the work was commissioned specifically for Sigmund Haffner's conferral of nobility, though the work was not originally a symphony. Mozart originally wrote the piece in a very short period of months in 1782 as a serenade. Mozart was so impressed by the quality of the serenade that when Sigmund's ennoblement came, he quickly reworked it into the Haffner Symphony by 1783. As with his other late period symphonies, it can be argued that it, and symphonies 36 - 41, transcends all of his previous works for symphony.
