Nicknamed Appassionata and completed in or around 1805, is considered one of Beethoven\'s greatest piano sonatas of his middle period. Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a are the other two from this period (1803-1812).
This sonata, not called Appassionata during Beethoven\'s life, was named so later for the stormy nature of the piece perhaps alluding to the emotional turmoil felt by Beethoven, as it was composed when Beethoven was nearly deaf. Indeed, the other aforementioned pieces were also composed as Beethoven was almost completely deaf.
