Torrent description

Bruce and Sammy 28-10-2008 BBC R2

Entertainer Bruce Forsyth provides a personal tribute to singer, dancer, musician and consummate showman Sammy Davis Jr (1925-90), who
is perhaps best known to younger listeners as a member of the Rat Pack. Forsyth warmly recalls sharing the stage with Davis Jr in 1980, and profiles a man whose life was marked by political controversy, racial prejudice, tragedy and a surfeit of talent. Featuring new interviews with Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, Lionel Blair and pianist/composer Laurie Holloway. Plus archive material from Davis Jr's live performances and interviews. Producer Dan Cocker

From The Radio Times

He sang. He danced. He played instruments. His impressions were spot on and his comedic timing faultless. Sammy Davis Jr was an all-round entertainment clever clogs and not just average at all of these-he was brilliant. This is notjust my opinion, it is one shared by the presenter of this biography, Bruce Forsyth. It's a life story of love, obsession, subjugation, scandal and tragedy. As tributes go, this is more fact-packed than Rat Pack, although his famous friends obviously get their mention. But Forsyth is determined to celebrate the multi-abilities of the man, and uses musical and comedy clips to prove his point. As fellow contributor and fan Lionel Blair says, "You know people say 'You've got to see so-and-so. They are the best thing you'll ever see.' And we say 'No, we've seen the best thing we'll ever see.' Good though they might be, they're not Sammy Davis Jr."
