Release Notes:
Its been a long time in the making for Blood Red Tape, and all that hard work
for the boys from Portal has paid off. Everything they have ever done in the
past officially pales in comparison to the release of Blood Red Tape. This
release simply puts them in a class of their own. The vocals are crisp and
clean, Kenton Thomas delivers his low enigmatic voice perfectly in each
incredible song while Kevin Hoskin (Bass), Ross Brooks (Guitar) and Bill George
(Drums) seem as if they have perfected their craft with this album.
One thing that was a pleasant surprise on this album, even to a long time
listener such as myself, is the addition of more harmonic songs such as Six
Degrees and Back In The Day. Despite the addition of these more harmonic songs,
their music has remained as complex as ever. All you have to do is listen the
progressive anthems Your Kettle, Splitzkrein and Call To Arms II:Jebel Moon.
Over the years Portal have toned down on the lengthy songs and created more
radio friendly rock songs, but with this album it seems like they created a
perfect mix. Blood Red Tape does have some lengthy tracks on here such as Your
Kettle", The Kingdom and We Kuffar, all of which come in at over 10 minutes
long. Despite the length all of these songs they certainly hold there own
throughout, thanks to the intriguing music provided by Portal.
Songs to get you started from this CD are The Simple Things, Call To Arms
II:Jebel Moon, Back In The Day and Your Kettle. I may be a little biased but,
this is easily a pick for Album of the Year in my eyes. This CD has been easily
worth the wait and I can only hope you do yourself a favor and pick it up.
