On 6 July 1988 a North Sea oil rig was destroyed by a series of explosions and a massive fire in which 167 men died. Based on Lord Cullen's Public Inquiry, Stephen Phelps's drama is a minute-by-minute chronicle of the disaster as it happened exactly 20 years ago. Performed by Ewan Bailey, Nigel Betts, Kenny Blyth, Mark Bonnar, Liam Brennan, Stephen Critchlow, Ben Crowe, Nyasha Hatendi, Chris Pavlo, Roshan R Rohatgi, John Rowe, Dan Starkey, John Kay Steel and Joan Walker.

Set in real time, with a minute-by-minute relay of events, this drama starts just before 10pm on 6 July, the exact moment 20 years ago when the first devastating explosion occurred on the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea. The harrowing fate of workers trying to escape this hell on hot metal by jumping into a burning sea would be gratuitously gruesome were it not for the fact that it was horribly real.
