This is in every way a remarkable CD. Not only are the performances fused with a poetic inspiration seldom encountered in the recording studio, but the sound-quality is uniformly first rate. Kyung Wha Chung and Radu Lupu treat the Franck in an unhurried and thoughtful manner that allows the lyricism of the work to take pride of place. In the Debussy Violin Sonata Chung's superb instrumental craft reminded me of Heifetz—her directness is disarming. Yet it is the subtlety and atmosphere of the music that make the biggest impact. The Ravel and the Debussy Sonata for flute, viola and harp, though recorded some 15 years earlier, have come up with a pristine freshness here. There is not a musician in the country with a more natural fluency than Osian Ellis, and together with the delicately sensitive contributions of the other players, the performances make for some compelling listening.

-- James Methuen-Campbell, Gramophone [1/1989]

Kyung-Wha Chung and Radu Lupu collaborate on the most musical account of the Franck sonata in the catalog, one that restores to the work its Gallic elegance, a quality that rarely survives the passion of most performances. Their reading is intimately expressive, almost fragile, and in Chung's playing the dreaminess of the score is beautifully evoked. With his brilliant technique and sparing use of the pedal, Lupu manages an extraordinary revelation of detail in the piano part, transforming what usually sounds like a furnace going full blast--lots of heat and noise, but not something you'd want to get too close to- -into a source of poetry. The recording, made in 1977, is warm and approachable, like the performance. At mid-price, and generously filled out (with Ravel's Introduction and Allegro, and Debussy's Sonatas for Violin and Piano and for Flute, Viola, and Harp) this is as basic as a disc can get.
