Torrent description

A newcomer to jazz could be forgiven for thinking that the music has little in common with blues. Modern improvisation, with its ample stock of oblique melodies, arcane chord substitutions and its conservatory standards of virtuosity, might at first seem far removed from any of the down home tunes of sorrow, joy and lust that came out of the Mississippi Delta.
Yet at the most practical level the basic twelve-bar progression forms a lingua franca for players from differing backgrounds who may be meeting for their first jam session. More importantly, without at least some affinity for the emotional depths of the blues, the finest technique will remain, well, no more than technique.
Whether or not you believe his oft-repeated claim to be the "inventor" of jazz, Jelly Roll Morton (c 1890-1941) deserves our gratitude for uniting the formal discipline of ragtime with the brasher spirit of the blues. As a member of the Creole musical elite of piano players, Morton harboured a certain disdain for the bluesmen, whom he regarded as crude and untutored. (from Liner Notes)
