Haru beleeft een doodnormale schooldag, maar wanneer ze met een vriendinnetje naar huis loopt gebeurt er iets merkwaardigs.
Ze redt een kat die bijna werd overreden door een auto, en tot haar verbazing staat het dier op en bedankt haar. Haru is perplex maar haar moeder herinnert haar aan een vergelijkbaar voorval van toen ze nog klein was.
's Avonds blijkt er een processie van katten op straat plaats te vinden..De kat die Haru redde blijkt een prins te zijn die haar uitnodigt om het kattenrijk te komen bezoeken.

A young girl rescues a mysterious cat from traffic and soon finds herself the unwelcome recipient of gifts and favors from the King of the Cats, who also wants her to marry his son, Prince Lune.
With the assistance of a fat, grouchy real cat and an elegant cat statuette come to life (both characters featured in Studio Ghibli's earlier anime "Whisper of the Heart"), the girl visits the Cat Kingdom.
