Review from Amazon.com.

THE BAND: Geddy Lee (lead vocals, bass), Alex Lifeson (guitar), Neil Peart (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1975) 8 tracks clocking in at approximately 38 minutes. Included with the disc is a 2-page foldout containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, and musician pictures. This is Rush's 2nd album. Recorded at Toronto Sound Studios, Toronto, Canada. This remastered version released in 1997. Label - Mercury.

COMMENTS: Exit drummer John Rutsey, enter Neil Peart. Peart would forever be linked to many a list of "greatest rock drummers"... ever. Obviously, a step in the right direction. Peart also contributed with writing musically, and perhaps even more so, lyrically. With a new drummer, Rush would forever be changed. With millions of records sold in the years to come, there'd be no looking back. John Rutsey was now the 70's Pete Best (original drummer for the Beatles) and will forever be wondering - what if I had stayed with the band? As semi-classic as "Fly By Night" might be, it's simply... an odd album. It continues in the same vein as their debut - more rock than artsy or progressive - but it grabs me as being hot and cold. Highlights include the opener "Anthem" - a good rocker featuring great guitar riffs - quick and heavy; "Best I Can" is another rock gem though not quite as heavy; "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" is great four-part story (over eight minutes long) about the two foes battling it out; and lastly the lone radio hit "Fly By Night". That leaves the remaining four songs as filler... and one song worse than filler in "Rivendell" - perhaps my least favorite song in their entire catalog (it's a five minute sad vocal and guitar only ballad... no bones about it, it's a tough listen). The last 3 tracks on the album are extremely mellow... dare I say "Fly By Night" ends on a downer of a note. The closer "In The End" starts off soft with the band going at full force at about the two minute mark... still a slow song though. Classic sure, but still raw and potential not fully realized. The best is yet to come

If you haven't heard the remastered version of this album then you are in for a real treat. Neil's drums sound awesome and it sounds almost like a whole new recording compared to the previous CD. Neil really shows that he is already the best drummer in rock and has been for a long time. The band really cut loose on this album and it shows with the aggressive playing. If you like this album and the first RUSH album then you need the remastered versions of these classic recordings. This is not Rush's best album but its still highly enjoyable and the sound clarity thanks to Bob Ludwig's remastering is a breath of fresh air.
