Chicago-born band founder Jean Beauvoir first came to the attention of the Rock world in his capacity as bassist with outrageous New York Punk Rock troupe THE PLASMATICS, fronted by the legendary Wendy O' Williams. Beauvoir left the group in 1981 when he felt the musical direction was veering away from the original over the top Punk ideal towards a more Metal based commercial line.

Intent on pursuing a solo career Beauvoir was invited to play bass on BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN guitarist LITTLE STEVEN's debut solo record and subsequently spent two years in his DISCIPLES OF SOUL outfit. Resurrecting his own solo plans he turned down offers to join PRINCE and MICHAEL JACKSON's touring bands along the way.

After a brief period working with former PLASMATICS colleagues Richie Stotts and Tony Petri in KING FLUX, after signing to Virgin Records Beauvoir made two solo albums. 'Drums Along The Mohawk' in 1986 and 'Jack-knifed' in 1989 were released as his songwriting talents were utilised by the likes of JOHN WAITE, KISS and DEBBIE HARRY and producing two albums for THE RAMONES.

After the disappointment of seeing 'Jack-knifed' sell extremely poorly in comparison to the successful 'Drums Along The Mohawk' album, and with a third album in the can but unreleased, Beauvoir decided to put together the American/German supergroup of his dreams and formed VOODOO X in Berlin, but the world wasn't quite ready for the band's Max Norman produced debut album 'The Awakening. Vol. 1', so Jean returned to the States to lick his wounds and modify the battle plan.

Moving to Los Angeles Beauvoir, with the assistance of KISS' PAUL STANLEY and GENE SIMMONS in a management capacity,, put CROWN OF THORNS together, roping in ex-SHALAMAR guitarist Micki Free, CHIC, POWERSTATION and THE DISTANCE drummer Tony Thompson and Texan born bassist Michael Paige, the latter, who got the gig after CROWN OF THORNS had briefly worked with T.M. Stevens in the slot, is noted as a session player of some repute who would contribute to the recording of Canadian songstress SASS JORDAN's 'Rats' album during his time with CROWN OF THORNS.

This quartet recorded a six track demo that was immediately pressed as a 1000 run CD with a view to using it as a bargaining tool to get signed. A label bidding war ensued, with six major labels vying for CROWN OF THORNS signatures with Interscope winning the battle and signing the band for a cool million dollars.

The band's debut album's release met delay after delay. A year after it had been completed its release date was pushed back indefinitely. Consequently, Beauvoir and Free asked for the record back. 'Crown Of Thorns' was finally issued in April 1994 by the British based indie label Now And Then, the company bringing the band over to Britain for a showcase gig at the Marquee Club in London. Due to other commitments Tony Thompson didn't travel, being substituted for the show by MOTHER'S FINEST sticksman Dion Derek. Thompson failed to show for CROWN OF THORNS summer tour of Britain and it wasn't long before his replacement on that trek, David 'Hawk' Lopez, was initiated as a full-time band member.

CROWN OF THORNS returned to Britain in November in support of British Hard Rockers SKIN. By this time Now And Then had issued 'Raw Thorns', an album consisting of demo material. The record was also released in Japan under the title of 'Killer Thorns' minus one track but complete with the three songs from the promo six track CD that had not made the debut album.

In the spring of 1995 the band returned to Britain once more, this time to co-headline the Now And Then organised Melodic Rock extravaganza The Gods 95 with TYKETTO. Changes had occurred since the SKIN tour with Micki Free's place being taken by former VOODOO X and FROM THE FIRE guitarist Tommy Lafferty, who was quickly made a permanent member of the group by his old mate Beauvoir.

Beauvoir and Lafferty actually went further back than VOODOO X as the pair had first worked together on a shelved Beauvoir solo album immediately after he had left THE PLASMATICS and Lafferty had also played bass with the shirt-lived KING FLUX back in 1984. Free had spent the months since CROWN OF THORNS return to the States recording his 'Gypsy Cowboy' solo album, using both Paige and Lopez in the recording of it. The album was actually mixed by Beauvoir and was released in Japan during 1995.

CROWN OF THORNS supported BON JOVI throughout Europe in mid 1995 thanks to Beauvoir's long-time friendship with LITTLE STEVEN who made constant appearances in both CROWN OF THORNS and BON JOVI's sets throughout the tour. The tour took in shows in Italy, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Britain, Eire, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Finland. However, a British headlining tour a month later, supported by British Metal band THE SHOCK, failed to bring in the anticipated audiences and many dates were badly attended. The band then returned to the States and began work on a brand new album at Beauvoir's home studio in the Florida Keys.

The resulting album, 'Breakthrough', was nowhere near as polished as the debut, taking in a few contemporary influences and a few visits to THE BEATLES back catalogue along the way, the band adding a cover of the fab four's rather obscure 'Don't Let Me Down' for good measure. In the interim, in an attempt to make inroads into the lucrative German market, Beauvoir had signed the band to a deal with the newly formed A2Z label. The first album was re-issued complete with a bonus CD of live tracks and two songs from the promotion six track CD of 1991 vintage under the title of '21 Thorns', so titled because of its grand total of 21 tracks.

CROWN OF THORNS followed the '21 Thorns' release with a short tour of Germany during February and March 1996 opening for KINGDOM COME before another brief burst of German dates in April as guests to BRIAN CONNOLLY'S SWEET. They came back in June for an open air show headlined by DAVID BOWIE before, once more returning to America where Beauvoir has kept everything on hiatus since whilst negotiating new European deals

In the early Summer of 1998, CROWN OF THORNS returned with a brand new album, 'Lost Cathedral'. Surprisingly, the record found Beauvoir and company still with Now And Then (although the company was now known as Frontiers Records, in deference to their new Italian partners). The album found the group sticking firmly to a Hard Rock path and with assistance in the studio from LITTLE STEVEN and mixing from Max Norman.

The album 'Destiny Unknown' was released by Frontiers in February 2000. Beauvoir would donate his services to the GERMAN ROCK STARS October 2001 song 'Wings Of Freedom' in honour of the September 11th World Trade Centre victims.

Beauvoir's presence as a songwriter would be felt on the 2002 'Fight' opus of leading German Metal queen DORO. The favour would be returned as evidenced on CROWN OF THORNS August 2002 album 'Karma', DORO duetting with Beauvoir on the track 'Shed No Tears'. The album also included a cover version of GEORGE HARRISON's 'My Sweet Lord'. A December 2004, three disc compilation billed 'Crown Jewels' would host two new, seasonal tracks 'Oh Holy Night' and 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'.

CROWN OF THORNS marked a return in 2007. Signing to Italian label Frontiers Records the band cut the 2008 'Faith' album with producer Bob Clearmountain being mixed by Mark Plati.
